Nursing Career in Malaysia
Malaysia’s population is increasing every year, and this mean the demand for healthcare services is increasing too. Are you thinking of becoming a nurse? If so, it is definitely a good news!
Besides serving in a career that gives much satisfaction, nurses can expect a growth in demand and more opportunities, plus better salary benefits. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the nursing programs in Malaysia and what qualifications are required to become a nurse:
No Experience, School Students, Considering Becoming a Nurse
If you are a school leaver, you can apply for the state-sponsored Nursing Diploma Program. Upon completion, you will obtain a Diploma in Nursing, and be qualified to practise as a registered nurse.
This is a great way to enter the workforce quickly and at a younger age.
Next, you need to complete a 6-semester Basic Programme, which spans across three years. This basic programme is available at any of the Ministry of Health Training Institutes around Malaysia.
The basic training includes:
- Safe healthcare to patients
- Soft skills
- Communication Skills
- Health Sciences
Many school leavers choose this path, but if you are state funded, you will have to serve a minimum of four years with the Health Ministry before taking your next step.
In fact, you can also get this program at many Nursing colleges and universities.
Alternatively, you can get a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN), if you are a registered nurse (RN) with a diploma and 3 years of working experience.
No Experience, pre-U students, considering nursing as a profession
If you are not sure what career to choose, you can do a 1 to 2 year Pre-U course. If you take the course at a nurse college, you will have time to think about what you really want to do without rushing to any decision.
At the same time, you will meet the requirements for a Bachelor Degree in Science in Nursing (BSN), which you will learn:
- Patient assessment
If you chose this path, you will become a nurse that can handle multiple roles, which will in turn increase your demand in Malaysia and abroad.
On the contrary, if you want to specialize or move up a pay tier ladder quickly, BSN is the nurse programme for you. Besides the opportunities to work for a hospital, you will also be able to teach, consult or go for private practice.
If you want to stay in general practice, you should have at least 5 to 6 years of experience.
This is ideal for those who wish to keep close to nursing, but also want to move to a more administrative position.
This type of position is for people who are able to influence and get things done at the workplace. So if your goal is to improve healthcare services, you will be able to do it by following this path. Moreover, you can progress your way up, from staff nurse, Sister, Matron, Chief Matron, to Director of Nursing.
Certainly, there are other ways to progress as a nurse, which is to choose a specialization. One of the most common specializations are in children and infants, namely pediatrics nursing, while the care of the elderly is called geriatrics.
Geriatrics is high in demand in Malaysia because of the increasing number of elderly that need care. This path will increase your career value because you will be more competent in determining the care that goes with your patients.
As you can see, once you get your Diploma in Nursing, the doors of possibilities open.
In a nutshell, one needs to decide on his or her path according to personality, interest, goals, and motivations. But one thing you can be sure of, there is definitely a spot for you if you decide to pursue nursing as a career. It is recommended to find out more and get exposed to various fields in order to find your niche. This way you can increase your chances of success both as a nursing professional and as a person.
